Chapter 6: The Bargain
“Welcome, traveler,” István’s voice was a low, haunting melody, echoing through the small cabin. “You are brave to venture this deep into the Veilwood.”
Lila straightened her back, meeting his gaze with a defiant stare. “I’ve heard stories about you, but I wanted to see for myself.”
István chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. “And what do you see?”
“A man, but not an ordinary one,” Lila replied, her eyes never leaving his.
“You have spirit, girl,” István said, nodding approvingly. “But beware, curiosity can be as dangerous as the forest itself.”
“What are you?” Lila asked, her voice steady. “Are you truly a thousand years old?”
István’s smile was enigmatic. “Time holds no meaning for one such as I. I am a part of this forest, as it is a part of me.”
Lila hesitated, feeling the weight of his words. She had come seeking answers, but the truth was more complex than she had imagined. Yet, something in István’s eyes—an ancient sadness—drew her in.
“Why do you stay here, alone?” Lila pressed. “What keeps you hidden away?”
“The world has nothing for me, and I have nothing for it,” István replied. “I made my choices long ago. Choices that cannot be undone.”
A silence settled between them, heavy with unspoken truths. Lila felt a pull, a connection to this strange, ancient man, as if fate had led her to this moment.
