Bismarck Officer Shoots Fleeing Woman Who Hit Cop with SUV

Bismarck, North Dakota — On March 7, 2025, at 12:08 p.m. Bismarck Police Officers Matthew James ...and Officer Nathan Anderson were dispatched to the 1100 block of 12th Street, in response to a 911 text referencing an individual, later identified as 53-year-old Melanie Udell, in a white Chevy Traverse. The caller indicated that Udell was possibly under the influence. The texture later indicated the suspect was escalating in her behavior. Officer James and Officer Anderson arrived at approximately 12:12 p.m.. Officer Anderson met with the witness and he explained his concern for the suspect and reason for contacting 911. This included his fear that the suspect was going to run him over with her car. Officer James spoke with Udell at her driver's door for over 6 minutes. They engaged in a seemingly normal conversation.
During the conversation Officer James smelled an odor of marijuana and alcohol coming from the vehicle. She was asked to step out of the vehicle, so the officer could conduct a proper investigation and the suspect refused. She started her car, backed up her vehicle and drove forward at Officer James. He was able to push away from the vehicle to avoid being struck. She then backed up again and quickly accelerated, deliberately turned her vehicle towards officers, ultimately striking officer James, causing him to be violently launched over the snowbank. Officer James was thrown against the fence with such force that his firearm flew out of his hand and landed on the other side of the fence.
At the same time as Udell was striking Officer James with her vehicle, Officer Anderson engaged the threat, striking Udell with shots from his duty weapon. Udell's vehicle came to rest on top of the snowbank, which was just a few feet from where Officer James was laying, still directly in the path of the vehicle. Officer James sustained injuries to his head, hands and leg, after being hit by the front of the vehicle and launched into the air. His head landed partially under the fence. He was transported from the scene to the hospital and was released later in the day. Udell was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital. After the shooting, both officers were required to go on administrative leave. Officer James requires knee surgery, and it will likely be at least a year before he’s ready to return to regular duty. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that the officer’s use of a gun was justifiable.

Chicago, Illinois — On March 20, 2025, Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers responded to a domestic-related ...call. As officers entered a residence, one of the officers encountered an armed individual, later identified him as 43-year-old Devon Smith, and victim inside a bedroom. As the victim fled the room, Smith pointed a firearm in the direction of the officer. The officer discharged their weapon, striking Smith. Officers handcuffed Smith and called paramedics to the scene. Smith was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment, as well as one officer for observation. A gun was recovered on scene.

Sebring, Florida — On Saturday, April 19, 2025, at around 2:55 p.m., Spring Lake Market reported ...that 39-year-old Richard Christopher Smith of Miami had stolen several items, including several alcoholic beverages, and walked out. As deputies were on the way, it was reported that the man was in a black minivan, driving circles around the store. When deputies arrived, Smith sped off, launching a pursuit that ended several miles later in the parking lot of a business at the Sebring Airport. It was during this pursuit when Smith held a can of Ketel One vodka spritz out the window as he drove by a deputy trying to get him to stop, telling the deputy “I was just going to give you a drink, that’s it” as he passed. We don’t know if he was expecting us to just say “Cheers!” and let him go, or what. After his toast, Smith attempted to ram two patrol vehicles in the midst of getting all four tires flattened by spike strips. Smith was eventually tased in the middle of his post-crash smoke break and charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of resisting arrest, DUI, refusal to submit to a DUI test and petit theft. His bond was set at $120,000.

Charleston, South Carolina — On November 21, 2024 at approximately 10:00 a.m., Charleston Police Department officers ...responded to a report of a physical altercation between two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. Upon arrival, officers encountered the individuals involved. During the interaction, one of the men, identified as 37-year-old Andrew Williams, presented and pointed a firearm. In response, two officers discharged their service weapons, striking Williams. Officers immediately rendered medical aid on the scene, and Williams was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during the incident. More than four months after two Charleston police officers shot and killed Williams, the department announced April 18 that the officers will not be criminally prosecuted.

Los Angeles, California — On March 14, 2025, around 10:20 pm, Southeast Patrol Division uniformed officers ...observed a vehicle driving erratically and conducted a traffic stop on Imperial Highway, east of Broadway. From behind their vehicle doors, the officers ordered the driver, later identified as 35-year-old Mario Sanchez, to lower his windows and to place his hands outside his vehicle. Sanchez yelled profanity at the officers and, moments later, exited his driver’s door. Sanchez faced the officers, removed a dark object from his waistband area, and quickly pointed it at them, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Sanchez was struck by gunfire and collapsed in the roadway. Upon the arrival of additional units, an arrest team was formed, and Sanchez was taken into custody. Officers rendered medical aid to Sanchez until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who after assuming care, transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers or other community members were injured during this incident. The object Sanchez pointed at the officers at the time of the OIS was later determined to be a cellphone.

Jacksonville, Florida — On Sunday, March 30, 2025, a 911 call was placed, with the caller ...reporting, 28-year-old Alquan Suydamhad, punched his pregnant girlfriend in her stomach while armed with a firearm. Three days prior, a similar report had been made, but Suydam had fled the scene before officers had arrived. When Officers Duhon, Shirk and Melton arrived to the apartment complex, they found Suydam in the passenger seat of a car. As the officer approached, Suydam exited the vehicle and began walking away with his hand in his pocket.
The officers gave multiple loud verbal commands for Suydam to show his hands. Rather than comply, Suydam looked directly at the officers and raised his right arm with the firearm in his hand, pointing the firearm directly at the responding officers. The officers shot at Suydam, hitting him in his lower body. Once he was on the ground, Suydam dropped the handgun he had been holding. Officers took Suydam into custody and provided emergency medical care. Suydam was taken to a hospital where he died.

Attack on Ohio Trooper Sparks Cruiser Theft and Rollover Pursuit Crash

Beaver County, Pennsylvania — On April 4, 2025, an Ohio trooper approached a man, now identified ...as 30-year-old Deshawn Leeth, who had crashed his vehicle on the side of the turnpike near the state line. After about 20 seconds, the man starts to run away. When he comes back toward the cruiser, the trooper uses a Taser, but it did not work and a fight begins. The video shows punches being exchanged, and at one point, Leeth gets the trooper on the ground. He was able to overpower the trooper, climbing on top of him and knocking his body camera loose. Bystanders attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Leeth then runs away and takes off in the trooper's cruiser, triggering a multi-agency response. The pursuit came to a halt in North Sewickley, Pennsylvania, when Leeth crashed the stolen cruiser. Video from the scene shows Pennsylvania State Troopers attempting to restrain him as he resisted arrest. Ppolice said an altercation took place, and investigators fatally shot Leeth . Police have not said whether Leeth had a weapon. Prison records show he pleaded guilty to nine home invasion charges across two cases that date back to 2012. When he got in 2023, he became the executive director of a non-profit focused on helping at-risk kids and preventing teen violence.

Lansing, Michigan — On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. Livingston County deputies attempted to ...stop a stolen BMW X5, eastbound on I-96 near Latson Road. The SUV failed to pull over and led deputies on a pursuit, weaving dangerously through traffic at speeds exceeding 120 mph and recklessly striking at least six other vehicles. The pursuit took a dramatic turn when two firearms were thrown from the vehicle—one clearly seen being discarded on the interstate. The chase came to a halt after the SUV collided head-on with another car at a red light near Jolly Road and Cedar Street, leaving a path of destruction across both highway and city streets.
Authorities identified the driver as a 19-year-old Lansing man, who is now facing multiple charges and remains in custody. The remaining four occupants—ages 15 to 18—were also taken into custody, with the youngest being transferred to a juvenile facility due to an existing apprehension order. The 18-year-old passenger was also jailed for violating bond conditions in a separate case. Incredibly, despite the high speeds and violent impacts, no serious injuries were reported. Police continue to search for two additional suspects believed to have fled on foot during the final moments of the pursuit.

Gun Pulled On Officer Sparks Shootout With Assault Suspect

San Leandro, California — On Sunday, February 16, 2025, around 8:30 p.m., San Leandro Police Department ...officers responded to a report of a vehicular assault that occurred in the 15000 block of Hesperian boulevard in San Leandro. The 911 caller said that a man, later identified as 40-years-old Reynaldo Faredy Melendezespinoz, intentionally rammed his car in a shopping center parking lot. Officers responded to the 911 call and began an investigation. Just after 8:50 P.M., Officer Blake Staniford located Melendezespinoz's pickup truck near the area of 164th Avenue and East 14th Street.
A traffic stop was initiated, and Melendezespinoz then pulled over. Officer Staniford told Melendezespinoz to roll his window down, but he did not comply and exited his vehicle. Officer Staniford gave melendezespinoz multiple commands to "Stop" as he walked toward the officer. Officer Staniford was initially armed with a taser and warned Melendezespinoz the taser would be used if he did not comply. Officer Staniford told Melendezespinoz to get in the car. Melendezespinoz then pulled out a handgun, pointed it at officer Staniford, and retreated to the front of his pickup truck, where he took cover. Officer Staniford discharged his service weapon. Melendezespinoz fired multiple rounds at officer Staniford and additional officers who had arrived on scene.
Melendezespinoz threw his gun which landed on officer May's vehicle, then walked from behind his pickup truck with his hands up. Officers gave Melendezespinoz multiple command to get on the ground, but he didn't comply. An officer fired less-lethal bean bag rounds, striking Melendezespinoz. He then complied and got on the ground. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Neither Melendezespinoz nor any officers were injured in the incident. Melendezespinoz's discarded handgun had no remaining rounds in the magazine.
Melendezespinoz was charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office with the following:
• Attempted murder (3 counts).
• Felonious Assault on a peace officer (3 counts).
• Felon in possession of a firearm (1 count).
• Assault with a deadly weapon (2 counts).
• Child endangerment (3 counts)
• Unlawful firearm activity (1 count).
The 13 felony charges include numerous enhancements based on Melendezespinoz's usage of a firearm and previous criminal history.
The 3 officers involved shooting are:
• Officer Blake Staniford – 3 years' experience as an officer.
• Officer Austin Lovel – 2 years' experience as an officer.
• Officer Quinton May – 3.5 years' experience as an officer.

St. Petersburg, Florida — On April 1, 2025, at 1:29 a.m., at 113 Street North and ...Park Blvd., a Pinellas Deputy attempted a traffic stop on a red Toyota hatchback for running a red light. The driver, 65-year-old Marina DeFilippo, had a brief verbal exchange with the deputy, then drove away. She eventually turned onto Gulf Blvd. Indian Shores Police then initiated a felony traffic stop on Gulf Blvd. at 177 Avenue West and they saw her with a gun in her hand. She ignored commands to stop and did a U-turn and headed northbound on Gulf Blvd.
Near 20254 Gulf Blvd, Pinellas Deputies used their MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle to perform a pit maneuver that spun the Toyota around. DeFilippo continued to drive towards a Deputy standing behind his open patrol car door. Several deputies fired shots in an attempt to stop her. After hitting the patrol car door and injuring the Deputy, DeFilippo continued driving away as deputies fired their weapons. She crashed head on into another patrol car, finally coming to a stop. DeFilippo suffered three non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital.

Suspect Opens Fire on Ohio Officers During Intense Pursuit

Wooster, Ohio — On April 2, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Wooster Police investigated the theft ...of a license plate from a vehicle in the 600 block of Madison Avenue. The license plate was entered into the Flock Camera system (a camera system that reads license plates throughout the city), and it was determined that the license plate had been placed on a silver Honda Pilot and the vehicle was travelling in the Northern part of the City. Officers located the vehicle and a short pursuit started before being called off by Wooster Police. The vehicle was spotted again on the East side of town and an officer initiated a traffic stop at Geyers Chapel Rd. just South of Back Orrville Rd. The suspect immediately exited his vehicle and fired several rounds at the Officer.
The Officer returned fire at which time the suspect entered his vehicle and fled from the scene. Wooster Police did not pursue at this time due to damage from being struck by gunfire. The Wayne County Sheriffs Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol located the vehicle and a second pursuit started. The suspect fired several more rounds at Officers from the vehicle during the pursuit. No officers fired any rounds during this pursuit. The suspect vehicle entered the City of Wooster and The Ohio State Highway Patrol along with the Dalton Police Department collided with the suspect vehicle on Cleveland Rd at the Dix Expressway exit ramp. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Wooster Community Hospital and then transported via life flight to Akron General Hospital. The suspect sustained life threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound. No officers were injured during this event.

Oklahoma City Police Capture Wanted Felon After a Vehicle Pursuit

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — On April 2, 2025, Oklahoma City police say a pursuit began in ...Del City and ended near Pennsylvania and Reno avenues, where officers used a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) to stop the fleeing car. During the chase, a magazine was thrown from the suspect’s vehicle. Once stopped, officers discovered a gun inside the car and arrested 34-year-old Deshane Jefferson, who was wanted for a felony warrant out of Jackson County, Oklahoma. According to Jackson County court documents, Jefferson met with a confidential informant in November.
Investigators said Jefferson was trying to sell a pistol, and he told the informant that he had used the weapon in a shooting in Wellington, Texas. Court documents showed Jefferson was convicted of a felony in Jackson County in 2018 and has a known gang affiliation. The second suspect in the vehicle remains under investigation by Texas Rangers. Both individuals were taken into custody without further incident and are being held at the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Jefferson is facing charges for felony carrying or possessing a firearm by a convicted felon, endangering others while eluding police, and flight to avoid arrest in Texas.
