Officer Shoots Suspect After He Aims Flames at Police

San Diego, California β On September 16, 2026, shortly after 9:00 a.m., San Diego Police officers ...responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a man vandalizing vehicles in the North Park Area. Callers provided a description of the suspect and reported he was using a metal object to break vehicle windows. The suspect, 33-year-old Saul Sandoval Chavez, vandalized approximately 18 vehicles in the North Park Area. Officers located Chavez near the 2900 block of Polk Avenue. When officer #1 attempted to contact him, Chavez ran and officer #1 began a foot pursuit. At 30th street and Lincoln Avenue, Chavez stopped, turned toward officer #1, and ignited an incendiary device. The device consisted of an aerosol spray bottle containing a flammable substance and a torch lighter. Chavez continued running North on 30th Street and entered a business in the 4000 Block of 30th Street. Officer #1 continued the foot pursuit as additional officers arrived. For approximately five minutes, officers gave Chavez repeated commands to get on the ground and warned that a K-9 would be released if he did not comply. Chavez ignored commands and pointed the lit incendiary device at a wall shared with an occupied business for several seconds.
Officers deployed less-lethal beanbag rounds, but they were not effective. After officer Lehr released K-9 Ryder, Chavez emerged and used the incendiary device against him. Officers deployed additional bean bag rounds and then advanced into the business. Chavez directed the flame toward officers. Officer Lehr discharged his service weapon. During the gunfire, a round struck the aerosol container, causing it to rupture and create a fireball. Following the shooting, officers pulled Chavez from the business while portions of his clothing were still on fire. Officers immediately began providing medical aid until the arrival of paramedics. Chavez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The incendiary device used by Chavez consisted of a torch lighter and an aerosol container that was struck by a round and ruptured during the shooting. K-9 Ryder suffered burns to his face and upper body after Chavez used the incendiary device against him. K-9 Ryder was transported to a veterinary hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and has since returned to duty. Three San Diego police officers suffered burn injuries during the incident. All three officers were treated and released from care later that evening.

Fremont, California β On July 24, 2026, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Fremont Police Officers were dispatched ...to an assisted living center in the 3800 block of Walnut Avenue following multiple 911 callers reporting a man with a gun. The caller described the man holding the weapon, 62-year-old Edward Oliver, and said he was holding elderly residents hostage in a dining room at the facility. Officers arrived and immediately entered the facility. When Officer Holback reached the lobby, staff members pointed toward Oliver, and a woman said, "He has a gun and he has my Mom and my Sister." Oliver was in a room with two women, one of them visibly crouching under a table as officer Holback approached the door. The officer looked through the door window and observed Oliver holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers gave Oliver multiple commands to put down the gun. Oliver responded, "No," and pointed the gun toward one of the victims. Unknown to the victims, bystanders, and officers, Oliver was holding an airsoft gun designed to resemble a firearm.
After Oliver pointed the replica firearm at the victim on the floor, officer Holback continued giving him commands to put it down. Oliver did not comply. Officer Holback discharged his service weapon, followed by officer Higgins. Officers immediately entered the room to secure the hostages. Oliver, who was on the floor, was still holding the replica firearm and began to raise it as the officers approached. Officers Holback, Higgins, Hensley, and Barakat discharged their service weapons. Officer Higgins' body-worn camera shows the rescue of the victim who was hiding under the table while Oliver pointed the replica firearm at her. Officers Hensley and Barakat discharged their service weapons after the initial volley of fire. Officers immediately provided medical aid to Oliver. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The two elderly residents were safely rescued. Neither suffered physical injuries. Officer Holback sustained minor injuries during the rescue. He was treated at the scene.

Russellville, Arkansas β On October 1, 2026, at about 10:32 a.m., Arkansas State Police Cpl. Stewart ...Condley was monitoring traffic near Calvary Temple Church on Highway 124 when he spotted a blue Chevrolet Tahoe traveling without its driver wearing a seat belt. After the trooper activated his emergency lights, the SUV continued at a slow speed before suddenly speeding through a red light and entering lanes of oncoming traffic near Walmart. The driver continued running red lights and weaving into opposing traffic, reaching speeds of approximately 95 mph. As the chase moved onto Highway 64 and then through city streets, the driver took additional risks to evade officers, including cutting through a parking lot, running stop signs and driving onto a pedestrian walkway to get around a Russellville police vehicle. Cpl. Condley attempted several tactical vehicle interventions (TVI) to stop the SUV, but the driver repeatedly managed to escape and continue fleeing.
The pursuit continued through several intersections as the Tahoe reached speeds of up to 80 mph on State Highway 7 and later traveled the wrong way around a roundabout before turning onto H Street. The driver again ignored a stop sign at North Arkansas Avenue and crossed multiple lanes of traffic, then nearly collided with a red Ford Ranger pickup at the intersection of West H Street and North El Paso Avenue. With the danger escalating, Cpl. Condley carried out another TVI that finally brought the SUV to a stop. Russellville police officers assisted in taking the driver, identified as 33-year-old Drake Cordero Rickerson of New Blaine, and his female passenger into custody without further incident. The passenger was subsequently released without charges, while Rickerson was transported to the Pope County Detention Center. According to the incident report, troopers also found a small amount of suspected marijuana in a bag strapped to Rickerson. He faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing that allegedly created a substantial danger of death, felony criminal mischief, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance, refusal to submit to arrest and several traffic violations. The pursuit also left the trooper's patrol vehicle damaged and out of service.

Atlantic City, New Jersey β On June 2, 2026, officers assigned to the Atlantic City Police ...Departmentβs (ACPD) SWAT team, along with members of the Atlantic County Prosecutorβs Office SWAT team, attempted to execute a search warrant at a residence on the 100 block of North Florida Avenue. Upon arrival at the residence, officers observed that the front door was initially open, but was then closed by an individual inside the residence. Officers announced their presence and purpose at the door and then used a mechanical device to breach the door. As the door opened, 52-year-old Donald Gardner (also known as Donald Capriotti), who was inside the residence, fired multiple gunshots at the officers. Two Atlantic City police officers were struck by gunfire. A projectile hit one ACPD officer in the helmet; another ACPD officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Sgt. Christian Ivanov a member of the Atlantic City Police Departmentβs SWAT team, suffered life-threatening injuries. His injuries included a gunshot wound to the groin that damaged his femoral artery and vein, causing critical blood loss. His fellow officers applied pressure to control the bleeding and transported him for emergency treatment. Officer Robert Reynolds of the ACPD, who was not struck by gunfire, responded and fired his weapon multiple times, striking Gardner. Gardner was subsequently pronounced deceased. A handgun was recovered from the residence. The two wounded officers were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center where one of them was released the next day. Sgt. Christian Ivanov, meanwhile, underwent two emergency surgeries on June 2 and was taken off a ventilator the following morning. He remained in serious but stable condition during his hospitalization. On June 18, 2026, Ivanov was released from the hospital after more than two weeks of treatment. He was escorted out by an honor guard and headed to a rehabilitation facility for intensive physical therapy.

Detroit, Michigan β On June 22, 2026, Detroit officers David Gonzalez and Joseph Wafer arrived at ...Cadillac Square to assist another unit handling an unrelated arrest. During the encounter, 18-year-old Alonzo Lee-Perkins walked past their patrol vehicle, drawing the officersβ attention because they believed he was holding something near his waistband. Officer Gonzalez ordered him to stop, but Lee-Perkins ran, prompting the officer to pursue him on foot with his weapon drawn. Body camera footage later released captured Officer Gonzalez repeatedly threatening to shoot as he chased Lee-Perkins through a parking lot. Lee-Perkins continued running, and Officer Gonzalez fired four shots, striking him in the back. Lee-Perkins survived his injuries, and a firearm was recovered near where he fell. Although police said the officer believed he faced a threat, the footage raised questions about whether Lee-Perkins had displayed a weapon during the pursuit, as he appeared to be running away without anything clearly visible in his hands.
The shooting sparked public outrage, protests and demands for the release of the body camera footage, intensifying an ongoing debate over police accountability and transparency in Detroit. During a preliminary examination, Wafer testified that he suspected Lee-Perkins was carrying a firearm but acknowledged that he never actually saw a gun in the teenagerβs hands. Lee-Perkins later admitted to investigators that he had a firearm secured at his waistband, while his defense attorney maintained that he never drew or pointed it at officers and argued that the initial stop and subsequent shooting were unjustified. A judge determined that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence for the criminal case against Lee-Perkins to proceed, with charges including carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm and resisting police. Meanwhile, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced on October 6 that Officer Gonzalez would not face criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence to overcome the officerβs legal protections involving self-defense, defense of others and the apprehension of fleeing felons. Officer Gonzalez has not been charged and heβs been back on full-duty since July 20.

Kettering, Ohio β On August 19, 2026, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Kettering Police Officers were alerted ...to a theft suspect driving a stolen Chevy Suburban on Smithville Road near Forrer Boulevard. Detectives and patrol officers located the stolen vehicle parked by a gas pump at the BP on South Smithville Road. Because this same vehicle fled from the Riverside Police Department the previous day, officers positioned their vehicles around it to prevent it from fleeing again. Upon seeing and hearing police lights and sirens, the driver quickly entered the stolen vehicle and attempted to flee, repeatedly ramming police vehicles. Several Officers standing by those vehicles were nearly struck while some officers remained inside their vehicles when they were hit. As the suspect continued revving the engine and spinning the tires in an attempt to flee, officers approached the vehicle to take the suspect into custody and stop the danger to the public. The suspect refused to comply. Officers ultimately used a window punch to break the driver-side window, deployed a Taser, and removed the suspect from the vehicle. During this process, a handgun was observed on the front driver's seat. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Angelo Locurto, was taken into custody. The handgun was determined to be stolen. Suspected narcotics were also located inside the vehicle.
A grand jury initially approved multiple charges against Locurto, including grand theft of a motor vehicle, obstruction of official business, failure to comply, assault on police officers, and several firearm-related offenses. On October 6, however, Locurto pleaded guilty to six offenses: grand theft, two counts of failure to comply, assault on a police officer, and two counts of receiving stolen property. Rather than receiving a prison sentence, Locurto was sentenced to five years of probation, two rehabilitation programs, a DUI Victim Impact Program, and restitution totaling $8,589.62β$6,089.62 to the Ohio Attorney General's Office and $2,500 to the Kettering Police Department. In addition to these convictions, Locurto has a prior criminal history that includes Failure to Comply, Improper Handling of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, Drug Possession, Drug Paraphernalia, Receiving Stolen Property, and Possessing Criminal Tools. On August 18th, Locurto rammed police cruisers and fled from officers, and on August 19th, he rammed police vehicles in an attempt to escape. He was driving a stolen vehicle and had a stolen handgun in his possession.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma β On October 6, 2026, Oklahoma City Police were called to the Walmart ...Supercenter at 2000 W. Memorial Road, near North Pennsylvania Avenue and Memorial Road, after a man was reportedly seen placing merchandise worth approximately $400 into bags and attempting to leave without paying. Store security confronted the suspect, who abandoned the items before leaving the property. However, responding officers were apparently unaware that the merchandise had been left behind. They later located the suspect driving a white lifted pickup truck and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. What followed was an increasingly unpredictable chase that began near the Walmart parking lot, continued onto major roadways, and eventually reached speeds of approximately 80 mph on the Kilpatrick Turnpike before the truck exited onto the Broadway Extension. Rather than remaining on paved roads, the driver repeatedly veered into open fields and grassy areas, forcing pursuing officers to follow him across rough terrain. Dashcam footage captured the truck weaving around traffic, traveling through tall grass and weeds near 122nd Street, and circling a warehouse parking lot off Holmboe Avenue before returning to the field. At several points, the pickup became stuck or appeared close to breaking down, only for the driver to get moving again and continue fleeing. The pursuit finally came to an end near railroad tracks beneath the turnpike, close to the Broadway Extension exit, when the driver abandoned the disabled vehicle and ran away on foot. Officers took the passenger into custody, but the driver remained at large as of the latest reports cited in the original coverage. Authorities had not confirmed whether he was subsequently apprehended. Despite the chase's connection to a reported shoplifting attempt, the merchandise had reportedly been left at Walmart before the pursuit began.

Hospital Officer Opens Fire on Man Who Advances Toward Him With a Pen

Oregon, Ohio β On Saturday, June 6, 2026, officers with Mercy Health-St. Charles Hospital Police Department ...(MHPD) were dispatched to the parking lot right outside of the Emergency Room (ER) Department of the Mercy Health-St. Charles Hospital for a disturbance between a male and female subject. Mercy Health Medical Staff had called the disturbance into MHPD Dispatch to provide the relative information to MHPD Officers about the disturbance in the ER Parking Lot. Furthermore, a male subject allegedly had been pushing a female subject into a vehicle in the ER Parking Lot, adding the vehicle had been a maroon jeep. Throughout the investigation, the male subject had been identified as 35-year-old Christian Strassburg and the female subject, the significant other of Christian. Strassburgβs fiancΓ©e drove him to St. Charles Hospital, but when Strassburg realized where they were going, he became upset. According to investigators, hospital staff called Mercy Health Police after witnessing Strassburg arguing with his fiancΓ©e and allegedly pushing her back into a maroon Jeep. A hospital police officer on foot patrol responded and approached the couple in the emergency room parking lot. When the officer attempted to get Strassburgβs attention, Strassburg reportedly challenged him to shoot and began advancing toward him aggressively. The officer ordered Strassburg to stop and put down what he believed was a knife, while backing away as Strassburg continued approaching. The officer fired shots at Christian and Christian fell to the ground in the Mercy Health ER Parking Lot.
According to the BCI report, the confrontation unfolded in approximately 24 seconds from the officerβs initial contact with Strassburg until the final shot was fired. Investigators determined that the officer issued nine commands to stop, remain still or put down the suspected weapon during the approximately 13 seconds before firing began. The officer later told investigators he believed Strassburg was going to stab him and that he fired when he felt the threat was imminent. The officer discharged seven rounds, with the report stating that he fired five times until Strassburg stopped advancing. However, Strassburgβs fiancΓ©e immediately shouted that Strassburg had only been holding a pen, and the officer later acknowledged that he had mistaken its gray tip for a knife. BCI subsequently identified the object as a fluorescent green ballpoint pen with a gray metallic grip and tip. Once the parking lot was secured, emergency room medical personnel rushed outside, placed Strassburg on a stretcher and began CPR before taking him into the hospital. Despite their efforts, Strassburg succumbed to his injuries. BCI reviewed body-camera footage, witness statements, dispatch recordings and physical evidence as part of its investigation. The Lucas County Coroner's Office ruled Strassburg's death a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds ("Shot during police intervention"). On October 9, 2026, the Lucas County grand jury declined to charge the officer, finding no further investigation was needed. The officer's identity was withheld under state law classification as a victim.

Officer Gets Shot in the Arm When Suspect Opens Fire Near Shed

Youngstown, Ohio β On October 9, 2025, a concerned citizen contacted Youngstown Police after seeing a ...man with his hood over his head near 4134 Rush Blvd. and believing he was burglarizing the home. Officers Eleazer Gonzalez and another officer responded and began checking the backyard, including a shed. During the investigation, an officer yelled βGun!β before, 28-year-old Arthur Mitchell, allegedly fired at the officers, striking one officer in the arm. Investigators later recovered two cartridge casings near the shed and determined they had been fired from one of Mitchellβs firearms. The wounded officer was treated at a hospital while additional officers and the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team responded to the scene. Police determined Mitchell had fled inside the home, prompting the crisis team to conduct a search of the residence. The crisis team eventually located an attic access in a second-floor bedroom. After other methods of checking the confined space proved unsuccessful, an officer entered the attic and began moving insulation, where Mitchell was found hiding underneath while holding a handgun. According to the BCI investigation, Mitchell fired at the officer, who returned fire while attempting to retreat from the attic. The officer then heard another gunshot and fired additional rounds before escaping the attic. Police subsequently evacuated the area, deployed gas into the attic and spent several hours attempting to resolve the standoff. A police robot was eventually sent into the attic and showed Mitchell was no longer moving. Officers later confirmed he was dead and found two handguns on his person. BCI concluded that Mitchell died from gunfire fired by the officer after Mitchell first shot at the officer in the attic. The investigation reviewed physical evidence, body-camera footage, interviews, dispatch records, firearms testing and other evidence; it also confirmed that cartridge casings recovered from the attic were fired from Mitchellβs firearms.

K9 Kylo Stops Homicide Suspect Before Officers Open Fire

Portland, Oregon β On Thursday, September 24, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Gresham Police officers were ...dispatched to a welfare check at a residence in the 17900 block of Southeast Market Street in Gresham. They discovered the occupant of the residence, Jeff Thompson, deceased. Detectives determined the deceased had been shot by somebody armed with a handgun, and through the course of the initial investigation, they identified a suspect. Early that same afternoon, investigators located the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Eddie Brandon Todd Campbell, in the area of Southeast 99th Avenue and Southeast Pine Street in Portland. Investigators requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force in apprehending the suspect. Members of the task force tried to get Campbell into custody, but he fled. At one point, Campbell attempted to carjack a female in a vehicle, but he was unsuccessful. Portland Police Officer Jerry Ables sent his K9 partner Kylo off leash to apprehend the suspect. In a nearby motel parking lot, K9 Kylo took Campbell to the ground. The suspect then produced a firearm, pointed it towards officers, and ignored multiple commands to drop it. Task force members to include Portland Police Officers Jerry Ables and Kameron Fender, as well as a U.S. Marshal and Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputy, fired and struck Campbell. K9 Kylo was struck, too. The investigation determined Officer Ables fired his Bureau-issued firearm four times. Officer Fender fired 5 times. An additional four rifle rounds were deployed by the other two law enforcement officers. Despite lifesaving efforts that started a minute after the shooting, Campbell was pronounced deceased at the scene. K9 Kylo was transported to two animal hospitals where, in consultation with an emergency veterinarian, the decision was made to euthanize him. Located next to Campbell was a firearm, the same caliber firearm used in the homicide earlier in the day. The investigation revealed that Campbell did not fire his weapon during the encounter with police. Ultimately, K9 Kylo died after he was unintentionally injured by police gunfire during the violent and dynamic encounter with the suspect. K9 Kylo had seven years of service in the community, where he was credited with 139 captures.

Hartford, Connecticut β On September 29, 2026, at approximately 10:15 p.m., the Middletown Police Department issued ...a BOLO (βbe on the lookoutβ) for a black Subaru Outback that they believed was being driven by the suspect in a homicide that had occurred earlier that day in Middletown. At approximately 10:48 p.m., the West Hartford Police Department received a Flock camera alert for the Subaru. Shortly thereafter, the West Hartford officers located it near New Park Avenue and Oakwood Avenue in West Hartford and began to pursue it. Stop sticks were deployed, which were successful in deflating one or more of the Subaruβs tires. The Subaru proceeded into Hartford, heading east on Flatbush Avenue. Hartford police officers joined the pursuit. West Hartford Police Officer Christian Montesdeoca was following immediately behind the Subaru as it crossed the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Hillside Avenue in Hartford. Just after passing that intersection, the occupant of the Subaru, later identified as 43-year-old Barrington Brown, twice opened the driverβs side door of the vehicle and fired a total of three shots at Officer Montesdeoca.
After the third shot fired by Brown, Montesdeoca returned fire by discharging his firearm through the front windshield of his cruiser. Brown exited his vehicle and ran between two residences located at 56-58 Flatbush Avenue and 50-52 Flatbush Avenue. Three West Hartford police officers, including Montesdeoca, pursued Brown on foot. Several Hartford police officers also joined the foot chase. In the rear area of the residences, Brown jumped over a fence separating the two properties and approached a black Acura, which was running, but parked in the rear area of 50- 52 Flatbush Avenue. Two males were sitting in the Acura and listening to music. A juvenile male, age 17, was sitting in the driverβs seat and a 19-year-old male was sitting in the front passenger seat. Brown brandished a firearm and ordered the individuals to get out of the car. While the occupants were attempting to exit the vehicle though the front passenger door, the juvenile sustained a superficial gunshot wound to his buttock. Brown entered the vehicle and attempted to drive it out of the parking area. Three West Hartford police officers discharged their duty firearms at Brown from an area along the chain-link fence separating the two residences.
Officer Montesdeoca, Sergeant Raymond Narciso, and Officer Amber Prose each fired their weapons at Brown. Brown then exited the vehicle, raised his arms in the air, and surrendered to the officers, who then took him into custody. A black handgun was located next to the vehicle and later seized by detectives. During the incident, Brown sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder area. Officers at the scene immediately rendered him medical aid. He was transported to Hartford Hospital where he was treated for his injury. He subsequently was arrested by the Middletown Police Department, discharged by the hospital and arraigned in Superior Court in Middletown on charges relating to the Middletown homicide. None of the officers involved in the incident sustained any physical injuries. The juvenile received treatment for his injury at Connecticut Childrenβs Medical Center and was discharged in the early morning hours of September 30th. It has not yet been determined at this stage of the investigation whether the juvenile was shot by Brown or by the officers who had fired at Brown. The investigation is ongoing.

Cambridge, Massachusetts β On August 21, 2026, shortly before 8 p.m., Cambridge Police Officers responded to ...a 911 call reporting people loitering in a private parking lot behind 675 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square. Officers James Nestor and Saimon Teclezghi arrived first, followed by field training officer Donald Conrad and trainee Officer David Kerns. Police recognized two people at the scene and Conrad also recognized 64-year-old William Woodworth, who was sitting inside a Jeep Compass. Conrad had encountered Woodworth during two previous incidents, including one in which a firearm had been recovered and another, about a month before the incident, in which police found crack cocaine and a double-sided machete. During the August 21 encounter, Conrad questioned Woodworth about suspected drug use and ordered him out of the Jeep. As Woodworth began to exit, he reached under the driver's seat and pulled out a .38-caliber revolver. Conrad repeatedly ordered him to leave the gun and put it down, but Woodworth ignored the commands and turned toward Officer Kerns, pointing the firearm at him with both hands. Officer Kerns immediately grabbed Woodworth's arms in an attempt to disarm him.
As Woodworth struggled with Officer Kerns, Officer Conrad fired six times through the passenger-side window, with his firearm briefly malfunctioning and ejecting a live round. Officer Nestor, who heard the commotion and saw Woodworth pointing the gun at Officer Kerns, fired one additional shot. Officers then pulled Woodworth from the Jeep and immediately began administering first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined that Woodworth suffered five gunshot wounds, including wounds to his head, shoulder and back, while investigators recovered his .38 Special revolver loaded with five live rounds. The entire confrontation from Conrad's initial interaction with Woodworth to the shooting lasted less than 60 seconds. After reviewing the evidence, including body-camera footage, surveillance video, witness statements and ballistic evidence, Cambridge District Court Judge Holly Broadbent concluded that Officer Conrad and Nestor's use of deadly force was objectively reasonable and justified. The judge found that Woodworth had ignored commands to drop the firearm before pointing it directly at Officer Kerns, creating an imminent danger to the officers and nearby civilians, and determined that the officers were not criminally responsible for his death.
