California Officers Shoot Suspect Wielding Homemade Spear Knives

Oakland, California β On July 13, 2026, just after 2:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol requested ...assistance from the Oakland Police Department regarding an armed man being aggressive in the area of 40th Avenue and International Boulevard. CHP officers encountered the armed man at an encampment along State Highway 185. He was ordered to drop his weapons, but he did not comply. He threatened the officers and walked away. CHP officers followed him before calling Oakland Police for assistance. Oakland Police Officers responded and located the man, believed to be 44-year-old Jose Angel Castillo. Castillo was wielding two homemade weapons, each a long metal pole with a knife attached. OPD officers arrived and immediately gave Castillo commands to drop the homemade weapons. Castillo did not comply. He again threatened officers while continuing to walk away as additional officers arrived on scene. While wielding the homemade weapons, Castillo walked to the sidewalk where a man and two children were crouching down behind a tree. As officers closed on his position, Castillo moved toward the man and two children before continuing north on 41st Avenue. An OPD officer who was equipped with a taser stopped to ensure the man and two children were safely past the officer. Officers gave Castillo multiple commands to 'Drop The Knives,' followed by warnings that force would be used if he did not comply. Officers then continued following Castillo into a shopping center parking lot. OPD and CHP officers deployed their tasers, but they were not effective. Castillo then began swinging the long metal poles with knives attached as OPD officers discharged their service weapons. Officers immediately provided medical aid to Castillo until paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, Castillo died at the scene. No other members of the community or officers were injured during this incident.

Officer Kicks Door Open Then Fires as Armed Suspect Forces Family Inside

North Olmsted, Ohio β On January 21, 2026, at approximately 3:03 p.m., Elyria Police received a ...report that a Brinks employee had been robbed at gunpoint. According to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the suspect was identified as 37-year-old John Johnson, who was seen fleeing in a black Hyundai. Police from multiple agencies began pursuing the vehicle, with investigators later determining that Johnson was wanted for aggravated robbery with a firearm and kidnapping. The pursuit continued into North Olmsted, where officers successfully deployed tire spikes before Johnson crashed into another vehicle at Brookpark Road and Columbia Road. Johnson then abandoned the car while holding a pistol and ran toward the nearby Clareshire Drive apartment complex. Investigators say Johnson then ran toward an occupied apartment and forced resident Alia Aboalodos inside while armed with a handgun. Aboalodos was home with her four children, and her account to BCI investigators said Johnson pointed the gun at her and directed her farther into the residence. Ring camera footage corroborated that Johnson pushed her inside, while police video showed an Elyria officer arrive at the residence, move children away from the doorway and force the door open. The officer later told investigators that he saw the barrel of Johnsonβs handgun pointed in his direction as he entered. BCIβs video analysis found that the first gunshot occurred less than a second after the door was kicked open, with the fifteenth gunshot occurring about 3.85 seconds after the breach. After the gunfire, another Elyria officer entered the apartment, recovered a pistol from beneath Johnsonβs right hip area and helped render the weapon safe while officers provided medical assistance. BCIβs firearms examination determined that the officerβs 9mm Glock fired the cartridge casings and projectiles recovered from the apartment and from Johnsonβs body, while Johnsonβs .45-caliber Glock was found to be operable but had not been fired. EMS ultimately transported Johnson to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the department, no officers or civilians were injured during this incident.

Dallas, Texas β On Thursday, August 6, 2026, at approximately 9:10 a.m., Dallas Police Officers responded ...to a robbery in progress at a business in the 3500 block of Sunnyvale Street. Investigators determined the victim parked her white Porsche Cayenne outside the business while her 9-year-old daughter remained inside the vehicle. A man, later identified as 39-year-old Renard McFadden, arrived in a stolen Ford F-150, approached the Porsche, threatened the child while indicating he was armed, and ordered her out of the vehicle. The child ran inside the business to alert her mother. When the victim confronted McFadden, he again indicated he was armed before stealing the Porsche and fleeing the scene. The Ford F-150 was left behind and was later confirmed stolen. The victim provided officers with real-time location information for the stolen Porsche through the vehicleβs tracking application. Officers from multiple patrol divisions, covert units, and Air One coordinated to locate the vehicle and safely apprehend the suspect. At approximately 10:10 a.m., officers located the stolen Porsche in the 5800 block of Williamstown Road. Uniformed officers initiated a felony traffic stop while a covert officer positioned his unmarked vehicle in front of the Porshe to prevent the suspect from leaving the area. The covert officer exited his vehicle with his department-issued handgun drawn and moved toward a nearby residential yard. Officer Celso Rocha fired four rounds toward the covert officer and McFadden. Officer Rocha recognized the individual was another police officer, ceased firing, and can be heard yelling, βBlue, Blue.β McFadden then exited the stolen Porsche and surrendered without further incident. No officers, the suspect, or members of the public were injured during the incident. Investigators also recovered a loaded handgun inside the stolen Porsche. Additional evidence recovered from the vehicle is being examined as part of several ongoing violent crime investigations. McFadden is currently charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Robbery, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Detectives are also pursuing additional charges related to other violent offenses under investigation.

Officers Fire After Man Exits Car Holding a Gun

Brooklyn, Ohio β On February 24, 2026, Parma police officers were initially called to the Knollwood ...Apartments in Parma for a welfare check on 29-year-old Ricardo Yuuki Davis. A friend had contacted police after receiving a message from Davis. When officers arrived, they found suspected notes on the outside of his apartment and, after gaining entry, discovered additional notes and documents inside. Officers also found a receipt indicating Davis had purchased a Taurus handgun. Davis was not at the apartment, so police began searching for him and his red Toyota Corolla. An emergency phone-location ping eventually placed Davis in the area of Brookpark Road, where an officer spotted his vehicle leaving a Walmart parking lot.
Officers followed Davis and attempted to stop the Corolla as part of the welfare check. According to the BCI investigation, Davis did not immediately pull over, but eventually stopped on Brookpark Road. Almost immediately, officers saw him reaching toward the backseat and radioed that they believed he had a gun. Davis then exited the vehicle holding a handgun in his right hand and began walking toward the officers. Police repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. Body-camera and dash-camera footage reviewed by investigators placed the first police shot at approximately 1:41:32 p.m., followed by additional shots as Davis continued moving toward the officers with the firearm still in his hand. About a second later, Davis fell to the roadway and the handgun dropped from his hand.
After the shooting, officers secured the handgun, requested emergency medical assistance and began treating Davis at the scene. Parma Fire Department personnel arrived and transported him to MetroHealth, but he later died from his injuries. The BCI investigation found that the Taurus handgun Davis was holding was operable, although investigators determined it had not been fired during the confrontation. The investigation also identified fired cartridge casings and bullets as having come from the service weapons of the two officers who fired. BCI emphasized that its investigation was intended to establish the facts and circumstances of the shooting and did not itself issue an opinion on whether the officers' actions were legally justified.

Suspect Pulls Gun While Running From Deputies

Sacramento, California β On February 15, 2026, the day before the officer involved shooting, a victim ...called the Sacramento Sheriff's Office to report a male subject had shot at him and his vehicle. The victim was not hurt, but his vehicle had been struck by gunfire. The suspect had fled the scene, but deputies were able to confirm the license plate of the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle was associated with 45-year-old Tywain Smith. Smith matched the physical description of the suspect that the victim had provided. Less than 24 hours later, on the evening of February 16th, 2026, deputies observed a vehicle involved with the shooting. The vehicle was headed southbound on Elk Grove Florin Road when the deputies initiated a vehicle stop. The vehicle pulled over onto the northern side of Tiogawoods Drive just west of Elk Grove Florin Road. Upon contacting the driver of the vehicle, who was later confirmed to be Smith, a deputy on the passenger side of the vehicle was able to see that Smith had a firearm on his right side of his waistband. Deputies removed Smith from the vehicle and attempted to detain him in handcuffs. Smith actively resisted, broke free, and ran from deputies. As he ran, Smith pulled his handgun out with his right hand, which resulted in the officer-involved shooting. Smith was struck by gunfire several times and fell to the ground in the street, dropping the firearm from his hand. Additional deputies arrived on scene and administered first aid until the fire department arrived. Smith was transported to a local area hospital by the Sacramento Metro Fire Department where he ultimately survived his injuries. He was later transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. The handgun Smith was holding at the time of the shooting was recovered at the scene. Deputies discovered the firearm was loaded and functional, but Smith did not fire his weapon at deputies. The first deputy fired two rounds from his handgun and the second deputy fired three rounds from his handgun.

Baltimore, Maryland β On Sunday, July 12, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., officers from the Montgomery ...County Department of Police and the Gaithersburg Police Department responded to the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road for a report of a "man loading a gun at the bus stop." Consistent with the caller's description, officers encountered an adult male armed who was later identified as 46-year-old Elliott Powers. Powers, who had no fixed address, was armed with what appeared to be a handgun. Shortly thereafter, Powers racked the slide of the handgun. Officers attempted to deescalate the situation to resolve it peacefully; however, Powers did not respond to those de-escalation efforts. Officers requested multiple resources to help deescalate the situation and resolve the incident safely. They also cleared the nearby parking lot of pedestrians and temporarily closed surrounding roadways to ensure public safety throughout the incident. Approximately 12 minutes after the initial contact, Powers raised the handgun he was holding in the direction of an officer. In response, officers from both agencies fired their service weapons at Powers. After the shooting, officers issued commands to hold fire once they determined there was no longer an active threat. They then moved quickly to begin providing emergency medical care until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived. Powers was pronounced dead at the scene. No pedestrians or bystanders were injured and a handgun was recovered and secured at the scene.

Houston, Texas β On Monday, On July 6, 2026, an off-duty uniformed Houston Police Officer working ...extra employment in the 4000 Westheimer Road located a suspect, 30-year-old Jamarcus Oneal Spates, inside a stolen vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Fort Bend County and was also related to an assault. At approximately 7:23 p.m., uniformed, on-duty Houston Police Officers arrived to assist and attempted to perform a felony traffic stop on the parked vehicle. The Officers gave several verbal commands. Spates did not comply, remaining inside the vehicle for an extended period. At approximately 7:53 p.m., Officers then made a coordinated approach approached toward the vehicle, at which time Officers believed the suspect pushed open the driver's door and extended his arm in a shooting position. Eight Officers and one Sergeant discharged their duty weapons, striking Spates. A drone was sent in prior to Officers extracting Spates from the vehicle. Officers then rendered aid until HFD paramedics arrived. Spates was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive. No Officers were injured. Spates was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (a felony) in the 482nd Criminal District Court, with bond set at $35,000.

Vallejo, California β On July 20, 2026, at approximately 12:19 p.m., the Vallejo Police Department Communications ...Division received a 911 call reporting of being robbed at gunpoint by a suspect carrying a rifle, who then fled in the victim's Honda Accord. Roughly an hour later, officers located the stolen vehicle through an automated license plate alert and followed it to Mahogany Drive, a dead-end street in north Vallejo. As an officer attempted to stop the car and give commands to its occupants, police say the driver, identified as 44-year-old Rommel Delfin Querol, immediately grabbed a .223-caliber AR-15-style rifle and opened fire, forcing the officer to take cover and return fire as backup units rushed to the scene. Authorities said the exchange of gunfire continued after a second officer arrived, with the stolen Honda rolling forward and crashing into a parked vehicle and a fence before coming to a stop. Officers said they fired again after the suspect continued to pose a threat, ultimately striking Querol, who died at the scene despite officers providing emergency aid once the area was secure. Investigators recovered the rifle, which had a high-capacity magazine. A passenger surrendered without incident and was taken into custody. Officials identified the officers involved, confirmed neither was injured, and said both have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing criminal and administrative reviews.

Eugene, Oregon β On January 11, 2025, Eugene police responded to a trespassing call on the ...3000 block of River Road after the owner of a vacant property scheduled for demolition reported a man removing scrap boards and metal. The owner had previously invited a neighbor to clear the materials, and that neighbor had told 41-year-old Jehoshaphat Commandest he could collect the scrap. The property owner reported that Commandest was on the land without authorization. Commandest was standing near a pickup truck on adjacent property when Officers Stephen Lahm and Lindsey Collier arrived. Commandest told the Officers that he believed the property had been abandoned and said he was willing to return the materials if requested. According to a later lawsuit and dashcam footage, Commandest cooperated with officers, was handcuffed without resistance and escorted toward a patrol vehicle before the situation suddenly escalated. Court filings claim that while Commandest was restrained, Officer Lahm repeatedly struck him in the face, briefly grabbed him by the throat and used a Taser multiple times after Commandest turned his body during the escort. Commandest was taken to Lane County Jail and charged with second-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest. The resisting charge was later dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to trespass in December 2025. He filed a formal complaint days after the incident, and the Eugene Police Auditorβs office sustained findings that Lahmβs force violated department policy. Officer Lahm resigned from the department on November 21, 2025, and remains under a state professional-standards review. Officer Collier continues to serve. In July 2026 Commandest sued the city, the police department, and both officers for excessive force, negligence, and battery, seeking up to $1 million and alleging injuries that included a traumatic brain injury, ruptured blood vessels in one eye, and significant facial bruising.

Man Pulls Gun & Fires at Two People in Front of Police

Albuquerque, New Mexico β On June 20, 2026, a confrontation was preceded by an unrelated incident, ...when 41-year-old Stephen Griego reported being pepper-sprayed and having his cellphone stolen during an altercation downtown. Authorities said Griego later shared videos about that encounter on social media, and investigators believe he armed himself before returning to the area on July 3rd, because of what had happened previously. Just before midnight, Griego was riding an electric scooter near Central Avenue and 3rd Street when he became involved in a verbal dispute with 40-year-old Juan Ortega. The argument quickly turned physical after Ortega shoved Griego, who then moved around a nearby barricade, pulled a handgun from his waistband, and opened fire.
According to investigators, Griego fired two shots within seconds of each other. Police say the first bullet struck 38-year-old Richard Thyberg, who had become involved in the confrontation, while the second hit Ortega. Officers assigned to patrol the busy downtown nightlife district heard the gunfire and immediately rushed toward the scene. As they closed in, they encountered Griego while the armed confrontation was still unfolding. Officers repeatedly ordered him to stop before four officers fired their weapons, striking Griego multiple times. Police later said one officer reported believing Griego was advancing toward the wounded Ortega, who was already on the ground, creating what the officer perceived to be an immediate deadly threat. Griego was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators said he suffered six gunshot wounds.
The shooting left four people injured in total. Ortega and Thyberg both survived their gunshot wounds, although Ortega later died days afterward from what police described as an apparent overdose unrelated to the shooting. A fourth victim, who was standing roughly a block away, was struck by a stray bullet that investigators believe may have been fired by an officer, though officials say ballistic and trajectory testing must be completed before the source can be confirmed. Detectives also recovered a Glock 48 handgun at the scene, and investigators later learned the firearm had allegedly been stolen from a friend of Griego before the shooting. The case remains under review by the Multi-Agency Task Force, APD Internal Affairs, and the department's Force Review Board, with the completed investigation expected to be forwarded to the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office to determine whether the officers' use of deadly force was legally justified.

Fort Worth, Texas β Onβ―Sunday, Julyβ―26, 2026, at approximatelyβ―6:15β―a.m., Fort Worth Policeβ―Westβ―Division officers were called to ...a priority one domestic disturbance at the Carmen Apartments located at 9200 Renee Circle, details of which resembled a home invasion. The caller provided details that her ex-boyfriend, identified as 21-year-old Andrew Ponce, broke through the front door of her apartment and armed himself with a knife. Multiple neighbors called 9-1-1 reporting the disturbance with the same details. The dispatcher also provided a radio broadcast update from FWPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) that the suspect has a previous history of assault against a peace officer. Before police arrival, Ponce was in a violent and volatile confrontation with his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend, placing them in fear for their lives and causing major property damage. Ponce chased both victims through the apartment and parking lot with multiple knives. Both victims received injuries during the incident. When the first officer arrived on scene, he observed Ponce in the parking lot with one knife in his right hand and two additional knives in his left hand. The officer gave multiple verbal orders to drop the knife while attempting to gain distance from Ponce by moving backward. Ponce refused to obey commands and continued advancing toward the officer with knives in both hands. Ponce continued closing the distance between himself and the officer. The officer then fired his gun multiple times, striking the suspect. Ponce fell to the ground and dropped two knives out of his left hand and the one he held with his right hand. Officers on scene provided medical care until the Fort Worth Fire Department arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injuredβ―during this incident. Two civilians received injuries during the initial domestic disturbance and were treated on scene. Officers recovered the three knives Ponce was holding at the time of the shooting, plus five additional knives throughout the parking lot and apartment. Theβ―officerβ―involvedβ―is assigned to West Patrol and has been on the department since 2023.

Lancaster, California β On Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 2:05 p.m., Los Angeles County deputies ...from the Lancaster Sheriffβs Station responded to a call for service on the 44000 block of Sierra Highway, Lancaster, regarding an armed male individual assaulting bystanders with multiple knives. The male was later identified as 23-year-old Robert Castro. Shortly after deputies arrived on scene, Castro rushed toward a deputy and began to stab the deputy with a knife, at which point a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Castro was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Moments later, a second deputy-involved shooting occurred. Deputies rendered medical aid to Castro until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. Castro was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One of the deputies was transported to a local hospital and was admitted for treatment for a stab wound. No other deputies or persons were injured during this incident. A knife with an approximate six-inch blade, believed to have been used to stab the wounded deputy, was recovered at the scene along with other knives.
