Officer Fires On Naked Unarmed Man Walking Toward Him

Louisville, Kentucky β On May 30, 2026, according to 911 calls, 27-year-old Martin Nitzken Jr. was ...watching a basketball game with his girlfriend and friends when he suddenly began acting erratically. His girlfriend told dispatchers that he appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, describing him as bipolar and saying he unexpectedly became violent. She reported that Nitzken assaulted her and two friends, leaving one woman with a bleeding wrist and another with chunks of hair pulled out. The three fled to a neighboring home for safety and called 911. After the group escaped, Nitzken went outside and continued behaving unpredictably. Witnesses told police that he stripped off his clothes, ran through the neighborhood naked, tore a shutter off a house, and became involved in an altercation with a neighbor, who reportedly suffered a dislocated shoulder. Additional callers described him as having a "mental break." Police were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. after reports of multiple assaults and a potentially dangerous situation. An emergency helicopter was also sent to monitor the scene from above.
Officer Nathan Stotts arrived alone and was directed by bystanders to Nitzken's location. Body camera footage shows Nitzken sitting or lying in the street while naked. Stotts repeatedly ordered him to show his hands and stop moving. Nitzken stood up and began stumbling toward the officer. Although he did not appear to be holding a weapon, he continued advancing despite commands to stop. Roughly 90 seconds after arriving on scene, Officer Stotts fired a single shot that struck Nitzken, who later died at the scene. The shooting quickly drew scrutiny because video showed Nitzken was unarmed and because Stotts did not use less-lethal options before firing. The footage also showed that after the shooting, Stotts remained several feet away with his gun drawn for more than three minutes before aid was provided when additional officers arrived. After reviewing the evidence, Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey concluded that the officer's actions did not meet department standards and announced his intention to terminate Stotts. Criminal and internal investigations are continuing.

Scottsdale, Arizona β On April 30, 2026, at about 9:45 a.m., an adult woman entered the ...front lobby of the McKellips Police Station located at 7601 E. McKellips Rd. While in the lobby, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Eva Josefina Garcia, pointed a gun at the station police aide, who then alerted other employees that there was an armed person in the lobby. While officers were responding to the lobby, Garcia pointed the gun at another citizen in the lobby, who was there for other police business. Responding officers entered the lobby, giving loud, direct verbal commands to the suspect to drop the gun. When officers began to enter the lobby, Garcia raised the gun toward the officers. In response to the threat of an innocent citizen, one officer shot Garcia. Once the woman fell to the ground and dropped the handgun, officers rushed to secure her and render first aid until she could be transported to the hospital for her injuries. Garcia remains under protective custody at the hospital. No citizens or Scottsdale Police employees were injured during the incident. The time from when the woman presented the gun until the officer-involved shooting happened was about one minute.

Aurora, Colorado β On Thursday, April 9, 2026, about 3:15 p.m., Aurora patrol officers responded to ...an apartment complex in the 14000 block of East Stanford Circle following a 911 call, stating that a 23-year-old man, later identified as Amare Garlington, was threatening to harm others in the home. Officers arrived on scene and coordinated a plan that involved multiple avenues of verbal communication to try and de-escalate. Officers did equip themselves with less-lethal tools, including TASERs and 40mm launchers equipped with foam projectiles, in the event they were needed. Officer Moore and his K9 partner, Cyrus, arrived to serve as part of a containment team. After nearly 20 minutes of communicating with Garlington to resolve the situation peacefully, Garlington exited the apartment and ran at full speed with a large butcher knife toward the officers on scene. Due to the life-threatening situation, Officer Moore released his K9, which was subsequently stabbed by Garlington. After the K9 retreated due to its injuries, Garlington attacked Officer Moore with the butcher knife, striking him in the head, while other officers deployed less-lethal tools without effect. Officer Moore fired several rounds striking Garlington, at which point both collapsed on the ground. K9 Cyrus, a recent cancer survivor, received emergency veterinary treatment that night for his stab wound and is expected to make a full recovery. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being led by the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. The Aurora Police Department is conducting a parallel administrative review of the entire incident. Officer Moore has not yet been able to be interviewed by investigators due to the severity of his injuries and ongoing medical treatment. Following the shooting, officers and Aurora Fire Rescue personnel immediately began providing life-saving actions to both the injured officer and the suspect. Garlington was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Officer Moore was also rushed to a local hospital by ambulance where he is still recovering from his injuries.

Susanville, California β On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at about 12:25 a.m., two Susanville Police officers ...were dispatched after receiving information that Ngirasiau "Derek" Sikong was behaving erratically, possibly under the influence of methamphetamine, and had threatened children while armed with a machete. When officers arrived, Sikong allegedly became increasingly agitated and, during a tense standoff from an upstairs window, held a two-year-old child outside before pulling the child back inside and making movements that led officers to believe the child faced an immediate risk of serious harm. The situation escalated rapidly when Officer David Lee fired through a second-story window after observing what appeared to be a downward strike with the machete toward the child. As officers entered the residence moments later, investigators said Sikong charged toward them with the machete and wounded Officer Lee, causing a severe shoulder injury. Officer Lee then returned fire, while Officer KC Capron deployed a less-lethal round after Sikong continued to ignore commands. Three children inside the home were located unharmed, but Sikong later died from gunshot wounds despite officers' efforts to provide emergency medical care. Officer Lee was treated at a hospital and released. After reviewing body-camera footage, witness statements, and forensic interviews, prosecutors determined that both officers' use of force was justified and announced that no criminal charges will be filed.

Lake Worth Beach, Florida β On February 11, 2026, Palm Beach County Sheriffβs Office deputies were ...monitoring drivers along North Dixie Highway for possible cellphone-related violations when one deputy claimed he saw 36-yar-old Kathleen βKatieβ Thomas driving while holding and manipulating a cellphone in her right hand. Based on what he believed he observed, the deputy initiated a traffic stop and approached Thomasβ vehicle. Almost immediately after the deputy explained the reason for the stop, the encounter took an unexpected turn. The deputy told Thomas he had seen her using a phone with her right hand, but Thomas responded by lifting her right arm and pointing out that she was born without a right hand. Despite realizing the contradiction, the deputy continued questioning her about whether she had been holding a phone and asked her multiple times to swear she was not using one while driving.
Thomas denied the accusation throughout the stop, but the deputy still issued her a $116 citation for violating Floridaβs wireless communications law. After the stop, Thomas requested the body camera footage and later posted clips of the encounter on TikTok and Instagram. The videos quickly went viral, drawing millions of views and widespread criticism of the deputyβs handling of the situation. Many viewers questioned why the deputy continued with the citation after Thomas showed she did not have a right hand, while others debated whether the alleged violation would have even been illegal under Florida law. As public attention grew, Thomas challenged the ticket in court and pleaded not guilty. A hearing was later scheduled, but before the case could proceed, the deputy requested that the citation be dismissed due to a lack of evidence. The court canceled the hearing, officially ending the case, though the viral traffic stop continued generating discussion online about police discretion, distracted-driving enforcement, and body camera transparency.

Toledo, Ohio β On May 17, 2026, Toledo Police officers responded to a weapons call in ...the 3400 block of Coral Avenue. The caller reported that a male suspect was loading a shotgun while making threatening statements, including threats to kill multiple people. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Brandon Pechette, who was armed with a shotgun. Officers issued numerous verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon but he pointed it at police. During the encounter, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and the weapon was secured. Toledo Fire and Rescue responded and transported the suspect to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured during the incident. Court records show Pechette is facing a first-degree felony charge for felonious assault with a weapon.

Buffalo Officer Fires After Being Stabbed By Armed Suspect

Buffalo, N.Y. β On May 23, 2026, Buffalo Police Officers traveling north on Deshler Street toward ...Broadway were flagged down by a pedestrian. The pedestrian pointed out a suspect wanted for the stabbing of her boyfriend that allegedly happened the day before on May 22. As they approached the suspect, 35-year-old Derrick Harris, officers observed that he was armed with a box cutter in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other hand. Officer Simonian, who was riding in the same patrol vehicle with Officer Slupinski, confronted Harris immediately, and tried to talk him down. After Harris failed to drop the box cutter and scissors, Officer Simonian pulled out his department-issued sidearm, prompting the suspect to then tell officers to "shoot me!" After Officer Simonian attempted to detain Harris, he then stabed the officer in the back with the box cutter. At the same time, Officer Slupinski deploys his taser, which was able to bring Harris down to the ground. Following a brief attempt to further detain Harris and arrest him, Harris breaks free from both officers and then runs into traffic on Broadway while still holding onto the weapons. Both officers then pursued Harris into the street before Officer Simonian discharged his firearm twice, striking Harris. Officers on scene immediately rendered medical aid to Harris for gunshot wounds to the hip and torso as well a stab wounds to the chest and neck. Officer Simonian was transported to Erie County Medical Center in a police vehicle to be treated for a stab wound to the back. Buffalo Fire and AMR personnel arrived on scene and continued providing first aid. Harris was subsequently transported by AMR to ECMC, where he remains hospitalized. Harris has been charged with first degree robbery for robbing a Lyft driver, while additional charges remain pending.

Suspect Shot After Slamming BMW Into Police Cruisers And Aiming Gun

Los Angeles, California β On April 8, 2026, around 9:40 a.m., Los Angeles Police Officers were ...patrolling in the area of Central Avenue and Towne Avenue when they observed a newer model BMW wanted for a felony crime. The officers followed the vehicle onto the 5 Freeway while requesting additional units. When the BMW began to accelerate away in an apparent attempt to evade, the officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. Approximately one minute later, the BMW turned onto the Olympic Boulevard exit. While on the off-ramp, the driver abruptly conducted a U-turn and accelerated against traffic, colliding head-on with oncoming police vehicles. After the BMW came to a stop, the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Jesus Ernesto Jaime, exited from the driverβs seat and stood behind his vehicle. Responding officers issued verbal commands for Jaime to surrender. Jaime refused to comply and instead removed a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Jaime was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Jaime was taken into custody without further incident and moved to awaiting Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, who declared him deceased at scene. Representatives from the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner responded to the scene and positively identified Jaime. An additional passenger inside the BMW complied with officersβ commands to surrender and was taken into custody without incident. Two officers were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released for injuries sustained from the traffic collision. A 9mm semi-automatic Glock handgun, loaded with 17 live rounds, was recovered from the scene. Additionally, a loaded .357 Magnum Astra revolver was recovered from inside the BMW. No other community members were injured during this incident.

Baltimore, Maryland β On Thursday, May 14, 2026, at approximately 9:12 a.m., officers with the Baltimore ...Police Department (BPD) received a 911 call for an armed individual, later identified as 46-year-old Louis Jackson in the 800 block of Caton Avenue. Officer Sharod Watson driving in the area encountered Jackson on foot in the 3300 block of Wilkens Avenue, and notified dispatch that the man fired a shot at his patrol car. Officer Watson exited his cruiser and issued commands. Jackson ignored the commands and continued firing at officers. Officer Watson and Officer Mark Rankine discharged their firearms, striking Jackson. Officers rendered aid until emergency medical services assumed care. Jackson was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A handgun was recovered at the scene near Jackson. No officers were injured during the incident.

Richmond, Virginia β On May 7, 2026, around 6:47 p.m., a man called 911 after hearing ...a gunshot inside an apartment where 31-year-old Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell was located. During the call, people in the background could reportedly be heard trying to get her to open the door, while the caller told dispatchers they believed she may have shot and that they could not get inside the apartment. As officers were responding, a second 911 call came in reporting that a woman was outside the apartment building firing a gun. When officers arrived at the complex a few minutes later, witnesses directed them toward an upstairs area while multiple residents were seen running through the property. Police body camera footage shows officers climbing the stairwell after hearing several more gunshots. Investigators said Wooten-Mitchell allegedly fired in the direction of an apartment and toward the stairwell area as officers approached. One officer then opened fire, striking her. Officers later recovered a handgun near her body and attempted medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Wooten-Mitchell was the mother of two kids, a 6-month-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. Her daughterβs 11th birthday was this past week. She lost the father of one of her children the day before the shooting.

Jacksonville, Florida β On May 4, 2026, in the very late evening, 33-year-old Brandon Kaphers kicked ...in the front door of a townhome on Rigel Road; the homeowner reported Kaphers was armed with a weapon when they called 911. Minutes later, Kaphers kicked in the front door of another townhome, went upstairs, and pointed a gun at a resident in her bedroom. The victim then called 911. Immediately after, Kaphers kicked in the front door of a third and fourth townhome on Rigel Road. Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriffβs Office responded to Rigel Road for the multiple armed burglaries. Multiple officers arrived and gathered near their cars. Kaphers appeared between two parked vehicles and walked towards the officers, outstretching his arm and pointing his gun at the officers twice. Officers yelled at Kaphers to drop the gun, but he did not comply. Officers Comayagua, Vazquez, Palliant, and Schmidt fired shots. Kaphers fell to the ground, dropping his gun. Officers took Kaphers into custody and rendered emergency medical aid. Kaphers passed away at the hospital. Kaphers had a criminal history including Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, False Imprisonment of a Minor, and other charges.

East Lansing, Michigan β On April 15, 2026, a 911 call came from employees at a ...Marcoβs Pizza restaurant after 21-year-old Isaiah Kirby allegedly entered the business acting as though he was a delivery driver. Workers said Kirby went behind the counter, opened a pizza box, and began eating food that did not belong to him. Employees repeatedly told him to leave, and one worker later said Kirby became confrontational and stood chest-to-chest with him before exiting the restaurant. Staff called 911 to report the disturbance because they feared the situation was escalating. While the employee was still speaking with dispatchers, the situation outside rapidly turned violent. Across the street, 63-year-old attorney Douglas Mielock had just left a barber shop and was getting into his vehicle when, according to family members and witnesses, Kirby attacked him without warning.
Witnesses reported seeing a struggle in the parking lot, and callers told 911 that a man armed with a knife was pacing around covered in blood after the stabbing.
Mielock was seen on the ground severely injured while people nearby attempted to help him. Officers responding to the original theft call were then updated that the incident had become a stabbing involving a suspect armed with a knife. Minutes later, police spotted Kirby running along Abbot Road while carrying what appeared to be the knife. Body camera and dash camera footage show officers pulling their patrol vehicles to a stop in the roadway as Kirby moved toward them. Officers shouted commands for him to get on the ground and drop the weapon. Within seconds, officers opened fire. Video released by the department shows three separate bursts of gunfire over roughly 20 seconds. Kirby fell to the ground after the initial shots but was still moving and holding the knife during parts of the encounter. Officers continued yelling commands before eventually approaching him with a shield, removing the knife, and attempting medical aid. Kirby was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mielock survived after emergency surgery and several days in intensive care.
