Woodbridge Police Sergeant Shoots Man Armed With Baseball Bat

Woodbridge Township, New Jersey — On May 29, 2025, shortly after 1:00 a.m., officers from the ...Woodbridge Police Department were dispatched to a residence on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township, in response to multiple 911 calls. The callers reported an assault with injuries during an incident involving a male, later identified as 35-year-old Aamir Allen, who had a baseball bat. Responding officers encountered Allen, who was carrying a bat while walking in the roadway. Officers repeatedly ordered Allen to drop the bat. Allen did not drop the bat and began walking away as officers followed him from a distance. Allen stopped walking outside a closed convenience store in Port Reading, where he stood holding the bat as officers continued ordering him to drop the bat. The defendant responded to the scene shortly after a transmission was broadcast over the police radio reporting that Allen had struck occupied cars with the bat. The defendant exited the vehicle and, after issuing several commands for Allen to drop the bat, fired six shots from his service weapon. Allen was wounded and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at approximately 1:40 a.m. He was pronounced deceased at 9:21 a.m.

A state grand jury, acting under the law that requires the presentation of fatal police encounters to a grand jury, had returned an indictment against the Woodbridge Police Sergeant. After hearing testimony and evidence, the grand jury finished deliberating on April 6, 2026, and voted to indict Sgt. Marco Bruno, who fired a series of shots that struck and killed Allen, with aggravated manslaughter (1st degree). Allen’s death was investigated by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), and the case was presented to New Jersey residents serving on the grand jury in accordance with the Independent Prosecutor Directive of 2019. Following deliberations, the grand jury voted to file an aggravated manslaughter charge against the defendant.

Pueblo, Colorado — On September 14, 2025, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Pueblo Police Department officers were ...notified of a strong-arm robbery in the 1100 block of Bonforte Blvd. A female citizen exited her vehicle to enter the store. She placed her purse in the cross-body position but just before entering the suspect, 38-year-old Aaron Vigil, stopped her grabbed ahold of her purse and violently ripped it away from her as she fell to ground and was dragged a short distance. Officers located an individual and a vehicle that matched the description of the robbery suspect near 8th Street and Glendale Avenue. A vehicle pursuit ensued, leading to the suspect's vehicle crashing in the 700 block of West 8th Street. Upon contact, the male suspect produced a knife. Officers issued multiple commands for him to drop the knife, but he refused to comply and was subsequently shot. Officers deployed tasers in an attempt to allow officers to provide aid without the risk of being injured. Once the suspect was disarmed, several officers rendered aid, and he was transported to a hospital by medical personnel, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Sacramento, California — On March 10, 2026, just before 6:45 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department Communications ...Center received a call reporting a disturbance involving a weapon in the 3100 block of Northstead Drive. The caller reported that an adult male on a school campus was armed with a knife and was chasing anyone who approached him, including another adult male. The caller also provided a description of both males and the knife the suspect was armed with. While officers were enroute to the school, a Sacramento County Sheriff's Office helicopter arrived overhead. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office air unit broadcasted over the radio to responding officers that they had located an individual matching the suspect’s description in front of the school, and that they had given the suspect multiple commands to put the knife down. Responding officers arrived on scene and made contact with the armed suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Jamal Dearmond. The officers gave Dearmond multiple commands to put the knife down and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Dearmond refused to drop the knife, continued to advance toward officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred. During the officer-involved shooting, a less lethal Conducted Energy Device or CED was also deployed. Officers then detained Dearmond and rendered medical aid. It was later determined that the suspect in the officer-involved shooting was the sole caller to the Communications Center regarding the disturbance involving a weapon. Dearmond was transported to an area hospital by the Sacramento Fire Department. On March 13, 2026, the suspect was medically cleared from the hospital and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The knife was recovered at the scene.

Gardena, California — On March 7, 2026, around 11:15 p.m., Los Angeles Police Officers responded to ...a radio call of a Robbery in Progress at a convenience store located at 15300 South Figueroa Street. Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Cynthia Anne Ivie Akers, standing behind the convenience store’s front counter. The officers issued multiple verbal commands to gain Akers’ compliance; however, those commands were disregarded. Akers then suddenly moved toward the counter, and grabbed a handgun from a zippered bag, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Akers was struck by gunfire and subsequently taken into custody. The officers immediately rendered medical aid and requested the response of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). LAFD personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Akers deceased. The investigation later determined that the weapon in Akers’ possession was a pellet gun. The item was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No officers or additional community members were injured during the incident.

Louisville, Kentucky — On March 27, 2026, around 7:45 p.m., LMPD patrol officers responded 7800 Vieux ...Carre Drive on a 911 call for service. The caller explained, her cousin, 28-year-old Katelyn Hall, was extremely agitated, armed with glass, had slit her wrists, locked herself in a bathroom, and had ingested cleaning products. Because of these factors, this run was not eligible or safe for deflection response, according to the LMPD. Officer Robert Baker was the first officer to arrive on scene and speak with the 911 caller who meets him at the steps of the apartment complex. As he walks into the apartment, Officer Baker put on medical gloves indicating an expectation he would be providing aid to someone. Officer Baker speaked with another female in the apartment who explained Hall has cut both of her wrists, was armed with glass, and was bleeding significantly. Officer Baker then went to the bedroom and began to speak with Hall for about 4 minutes, until other officers arrived on scene. During this time, Officer Baker did not approach the bathroom door, but attempted to deescalate the situation through conversation. Officer Baker requested additional officers with less lethal tools and an ETA (estimated time of arrival) for EMS. The 3 officers on scene agreed and developed a plan for one to be less lethal cover with a taser, one to be lethal cover, and one to go hands on when needed. A firefighter used a tool to break the lock on the bathroom door. After the lock was broken, Officer Baker and another officer attempted to open the door, but Hall was sitting in front of the door preventing officers from opening it.

As officers were trying to open the door, Hall breaks more glass in the bathroom. Officers were still unable to get into the bathroom because she was on the floor in front of the door. As time went on, Hall’s voice became more calm and quiet which would indicate significant blood loss or that she was starting to lose consciousness. With the intent to get medical aid to Hall, firefighters then broke the hinges on the door. As the firefighter were breaking the hinges, Officer Gabbard arrived on scene. He was not present for anything that had occurred in the room prior to this moment. After the hinges were broken, the door remained in place, and officers stood back from the door. At this time there were 4 officers in the room: Officer Baker, Officer Gabbard, and two other officers. Officers were standing about 3-5 feet from the bathroom door. As the firefighter moved back from the door, Hall suddenly opened the door and exited rapidly holding a piece of broken porcelain approximately 8-12 inches in length with a sharp and pointed edge. It is believed this was from breaking the top of the toilet while in the bathroom. When she opened the door, officers immediately attempted to give commands for her to stop. She quickly advanced towards officers with the porcelain raised at shoulder level. Officers Baker and Gabbard fired their weapon, striking Hall. The officer with the taser did not discharge the taser. Officers and the firefighters immediately begin to render aid to Hall by applying chest seals and doing CPR. She was transported to UL where she was pronounced deceased.

Jersey City, New Jersey — On September 5, 2025, at approximately 1:22 p.m., two uniformed Jersey ...City officers were traveling southbound on John F. Kennedy Boulevard (JFK Blvd.) in a marked police vehicle. Simultaneously, Jersey City Police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes was travelling northbound in a separate marked police vehicle. Sergeant Reyes made a U-turn. According to his later-given statement to law enforcement, he did so to determine if someone had shot at his vehicle. According to a civilian’s later-given statement, the civilian pointed out to Sergeant Reyes an individual, later identified as 26-year-old Steven Sanchez, walking southbound as the person who had shot at Sergeant Reyes’ police vehicle. A short distance away, the two officers in the other southbound marked police vehicle similarly made a U-turn. According to their later-given statements to law enforcement, they also sought to investigate if someone had shot at their police vehicle.

At approximately 1:23 p.m., the two uniformed officers exited their police vehicle on JFK Blvd. near Clinton Avenue. They observed Sanchez to be in possession of what appeared to be a handgun and began issuing commands for him to drop the weapon. Sanchez then pointed the weapon in the officers’ direction. Sergeant Reyes then exited his police vehicle and exchanged fire with Sanchez, who was struck and injured. After being struck, Sanchez fired his weapon in the direction of officers and ran towards Sergeant Reyes. A physical struggle ensued and Sanchez was taken into custody. Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived. Sanchez was subsequently transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 8:45 p.m. Sergeant Reyes sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the encounter. No other officers or civilians were injured during the incident. A compressed air pistol, as well as numerous projectiles believed to have been fired from that weapon, were recovered at the scene.

Port St. Lucie, Florida — On March 23rd, 2026, a Port St. Lucie Police Officer spotted ...a motorcyclist, later identified as 20-year-old Malachi Venerin traveling at 103 mph along SW Gatlin Blvd. before an officer attempted to pull him over. Instead of stopping, Venerin allegedly accelerated, striking the officer during the encounter. The impact did not end the pursuit, as Venerin soon lost control, crashed, and fled the scene on foot. The situation grew more chaotic when Venerin ran into a nearby fast-food drive-thru, where investigators say he tried to enter multiple vehicles occupied by customers, raising concerns for public safety. Officers ultimately apprehended him without further incident. A search following the arrest reportedly uncovered a backpack containing a loaded handgun and illegal drugs, along with packaging materials suggesting distribution. Venerin now faces charges including aggravated battery on LEO, fleeing and eluding, possession of concealed firearm in commission of felony, possession of firearm under 21, resisting w/out violence, driving while license suspended, driving motorcycle w/out endorsement, driving an unregistered vehicle, possession of controlled substance (THC cartridges), possession of marijuana with intent to sell (45g with baggies and scale). Venerin is still housed at St. Lucie County Jail with a $128,000 bond, His motorcycle was also towed.

Milwaukee Officer Shoots Fleeing Driver While Clinging to Side of Tow Truck

Milwaukee, Wisconsin — On Thursday, March 12, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Milwaukee Police Department officers ...along with a Department of Corrections Agent responded to the 1900 block of South 12th Street to check for a wanted suspect with a parole violation. Upon arrival, an officer in full uniform encountered the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Jonathan Otto, who was inside a full-sized flatbed tow truck with a passenger in the truck. The officer approached Otto and ordered that he exit the truck. Otto refused and the officer attempted to remove him from the truck at which time Otto immediately started the vehicle and suddenly drove off at a high rate of speed while the officer was clinging to Otto and the driver’s side window. Otto drove the truck for several blocks as the officer clung to the side of the truck. The officer gave several commands to Otto to stop the truck, even informing Otto that if he did not stop, he would shoot. Otto continued to refuse these commands multiple times. At this time, the officer discharged his firearm subsequently striking Otto, and finally stopping the truck. Otto, sustained fatal injuries. The passenger was not physically injured by the gunfire but was transported for medical treatment out of an abundance of caution. The officer that discharged his firearm is a 46-year-old male with over 21 years of service. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. He was placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer involved shootings.

Phoenix Police Shoot Suspect Armed With Rifle After Foot Chase

Phoenix, Arizona — On March 13, 2026, around 6:30 p.m., Phoenix Police Officers responded to the ...area of 35th Avenue and Osborn Road, after a woman called 911 saying her husband had beaten her. The first officer on scene noticed the man who was the subject of the call, saw him run through the complex and began following him. As additional officers arrived, the man was seen carrying a rifle and refused repeated commands to stop running. The man continued to move to an area with people and children, and this is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. After the man was injured by gunfire, officers safely approached him, removed the rifle and took him into custody. Medical aid was provided until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he later died. The deceased man has been identified as 40-year-old Jason Anthony Arrieta. The officers involved in this shooting are assigned to the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct and have approximately six and 18 years of service with the department. No officers or other civilians were injured, officials said.

Rochester, Minnesota — On March 11, 2026, around 9:30 p.m., Rochester Police Officers were dispatched to ...an apartment on the 19-hundred block of Ashland Dr. NW for a domestic-related call involving a man, later identified as 47-year-old Cleavon White. An adult female and multiple children were also present. Officers and the social worker noted that White was acting erratically and paranoid and they concluded that White was possibly a threat to himself and others. Authorities decided to place White on a 72-hour mental health hold and told him he would be transported to the hospital. He refused to go, so Officer Duit and other officers attempted to take White into custody. He resisted and a struggle ensued. White grabbed an officer’s firearm during the struggle and pulled the trigger, causing the gun to fire. That officer yelled that White was going for the officer’s gun. Officer Duit then fired multiple shots that struck White. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until an ambulance arrived and transported White to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.

Rochester Police Officer Shot After Suspect Opens Fire

Rochester, N.Y. — On March 20th, 2026, around 1a.m., an Officer with the Rochester Police Department ...stepped out to speak with a male on Lake Avenue, just south of Driving Park, in relation to a recent shooting in the City of Rochester. Upon approaching the male, he pulled out a handgun and fired three shots towards the Officer, before running southbound. The Officer was struck at least once in the lower body. He quickly applied his own tourniquet before additional responding Officers continued emergency medical care and transported him by Police vehicle to Rochester General Hospital. Officer's Injuries have been determined to be non-life-threatening, and he is expected to be released from the hospital. Officers from multiple nearby agencies immediately swarmed the scene, establishing perimeters and searching for the suspect. Around 5 a.m., the Rochester Police Department’s Drone Unit observed the heat signature of a male in a pile of brush and debris behind a building in the 700 block of Lake Avenue. Upon the drone shining a spotlight on him, he pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the upper body. The SWAT Team safely moved in and found him to be deceased from his self-inflicted gunshot wound. Preliminarily, the male appears to match the description of the male who shot the Officer. Although the Police is waiting on scientific confirmation of his identity from the Monroe County Medical Examiner, the tentative identification is that of the male suspected in that recent shooting. No Law Enforcement member fired a weapon during this incident. The injured Officer has been with the Rochester Police Department for just over one year and will be on medical leave for the foreseeable future. The Officer continues to recover from his injuries at home.

Suspect Calls 911 on Himself Then Drives at Police With Gun Drawn

Sparks, Nevada — On March 12th, 2026, at approximately 11:31 a.m., Sparks Police Dispatch received a ...911 call from a subject advising he was going to enter an occupied local business in the 600 block of North McCarran Boulevard in the Silver State Plaza and quote, "Shoot Everybody in The Business." The subject told dispatch that he was in a white Chevrolet S10 pickup in the parking lot and that he had a handgun with him. While officers were responding, a Sparks Police crisis negotiator contacted the subject via phone. The negotiator made 13 additional attempts to recontact the subject, but was unsuccessful. Officers arrived in the area at approximately 11:38 a.m. Once on scene, they immediately contacted the business to ensure the safety of the people inside. As additional resources arrived, a Sparks Police drone was used to assist in locating the subject.

Officers also attempted to utilize an emergency ping to pinpoint the subject's location through his cell phone. At approximately 11:50 a.m., officers located a vehicle matching the description given by the subject during his 911 call. The subject's vehicle was in the parking lot west of the business. Officers did not approach the vehicle initially, but watched it from a distance while waiting for additional resources to arrive. While officers continued to attempt phone contact with the subject and monitor his vehicle, a Sparks Police armored vehicle was requested to respond to help increase the safety of officers on scene. At approximately 11:54 a.m., officers observed the subject release a dog from inside the truck. Then at approximately 11:56 a.m., the subject drove southbound through the parking lot at a high rate of speed towards marked police vehicles. The subject produced a firearm and pointed it in the direction of the officers. Officers were still inside their vehicles as the subject vehicle drove toward them.

The subject used his vehicle to strike the driver's side of a canine patrol vehicle, temporarily trapping the officer inside. The subject vehicle continued and struck an unmarked police vehicle head-on. At approximately 11:57 a.m., officers discharged their firearms at the subject who remained inside of his vehicle. Officers remained behind cover at a distance while awaiting the arrival of the armored vehicle. At approximately officers began making announcements over the PA system to encourage the subject to surrender. Announcements were made for approximately 14 minutes and no response was received from the subject. At approximately 12:13 p.m., officers approached the vehicle and located the subject inside. On-seen medical personnel immediately began rendering aid. However, the subject was later pronounced deceased on scene. The suspect was later identified as 39-year-old Jedidiah Guerra. The investigation revealed that Guerrero was in possession of a black handgun at the time of the incident.
