Bodycam Shows Chicago Officer Shot by Her Own Partner

Chicago, Illinois — On June 5, 2025, Chicago Police Officers Krystal Rivera and her partner, Carlos ...Baker, were on patrol on the city’s South Side. According to official accounts, they initiated what’s known as an investigatory stop after spotting a man they believed might be armed. When the man noticed the officers, he fled on foot, prompting Officer Rivera to immediately give chase, with Officer Baker close behind. The pursuit led them into an apartment building, where the suspect ran upstairs and into a unit, with both officers following within seconds. As they moved through the building, the situation escalated quickly. The suspect forced his way into an apartment, and the officers reached the door moments later. Officer Baker moved ahead and kicked the door open while Officer Rivera was just behind him in the hallway. Inside, there were indications of at least one other person, and at least one individual appeared to be holding a firearm. In that split-second, high-pressure moment, Officer Baker turned and fired a single shot. That round did not hit the suspect, it struck Officer Rivera, who was positioned behind him and had not yet entered the apartment.
Officer Baker radioed that shots had been fired and retreated briefly up the stairwell, calling for backup and medical assistance, at times stating he could not reach his partner, while remaining positioned on an upper stairwell. Roughly two minutes passed before he returned to Officer Rivera, who was lying wounded on the floor. The footage shows him eventually dragging her toward the building’s exit as other officers arrived. Notably, the released material does not clearly show any immediate medical aid being administered before additional units reached the scene. Louisville, Kentucky — On March 20, 2026, officers responded to a shooting on East Caldwell Street. ...Inside a residence, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim, Remon Allen, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Rayvon Allen, his twin brother survived after being transported to the hospital. Following an extensive investigation, detectives identified 18-year-old Nathan Walker as the primary suspect in the homicide and assault. Over the following weeks, officers worked to locate Walker. On April 6, 2026, detectives received a tip that he was in the downtown area near a Taco Bell at First and Broadway. Officers moved into the area to find him and, after positively identifying him in the parking lot, coordinated a plan to approach and detain him. As officers approached and began issuing commands for Walker to put his hands on his head, he quickly produced a handgun and pointed it at officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire within seconds. Authorities said Walker continued to pose a threat even after being struck, at one point attempting to raise his weapon again as officers repeatedly ordered him to drop it. Multiple officers fired during the encounter as the situation escalated in what police described as an immediate threat to officer and public safety. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later confirmed he had discharged a firearm during the incident and was in possession of two guns, including one believed to have been used in the earlier homicide. The shooting remains under investigation and will undergo multiple levels of review.

Dayton, Ohio — On April 13, 2026, around 6:30 p.m., an officer was able to positively ...identify a suspect in a homicide investigation as a driver of a vehicle. When the officer got behind the suspect, the suspect immediately accelerated in an attempt to get away from the officer. The officer initiated a pursuit in the area of Lindale Ave. and E. Siebenthaler Ave. The pursuit lasted a little more than five minutes and ended on Davis Ave. near Massey St. The suspect, who was driving, as well as a female passenger. Inside the vehicle officers located a handgun, loose ammunition, suspected drugs and paraphernalia. The 47-year-old male homicide suspect was transported to an area hospital out of an abundance of caution and is currently in Montgomery County Jail and charges are being presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

West Berlin, NJ — On July 29, 2025, two New Jersey State Police (NJSP) detectives assigned ...to the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force were conducting an investigation involving 37-year-old Shawn Phillips when they observed him standing on the front steps of a residence on Haddon Avenue, in the vicinity of Bate Avenue. One of the detectives approached Phillips from around the corner of the residence and ordered him not to move. Phillips reached into his right front pocket and retrieved a firearm. The detective fired his service weapon multiple times, striking Phillips. Medical aid was rendered, and Phillips was transported by EMS to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. He was pronounced deceased at 2:13 p.m. Law enforcement recovered a revolver, loaded with live rounds, at the scene after the shooting. A court record shows that Phillips had been charged with multiple offenses after an alleged incendiary incident in Evesham on June 3. A probable cause statement for that case alleged that Phillips started a fire with “a Molotov cocktail like device," causing $2,000 in damage to a parked vehicle. Detectives learned Phillips "had a history of restraining order violations” involving a woman associated with that area. Phillips was charged with criminal attempt aggravated arson and criminal mischief. He also was accused of possessing explosives, a bottle of starter fluid, for an unlawful purpose.

Gwinnett County, Georgia — On March 15, 2026, Gwinnett Police were dispatched to a call where ...it was reported that a male had pushed his mother, was yelling at her, and pulled another person’s hair out. When Officer R. Carrillo-Julian arrived, he made contact with 31-year-old Kehma Johnson, who stated he had just smoked weed. Johnson was acting erratically, making odd statements, and then suddenly charged Ofc. Carrillo-Julian. He was tased, and Ofc. Carrillo-Julian was able to gain control of him until backup arrived. Johnson continued to fight officers all the way to the jail. Officers located Johnson’s elderly mother inside the home and had her evaluated by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services due to Johnson brutally assaulting her. They also made contact with the neighbor, who had a portion of her hair pulled out by Johnson. Johnson was charged with Aggravated Battery, False Imprisonment, Battery, Obstructing or Hindering Persons Making Emergency Telephone Call, and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers by Use of Threats or Violence (Felony).

Chino, California — On January 21, 2026, at approximately 9:55 p.m., the Chino Police Department conducted ...a traffic stop on the 12800 block of Central Avenue for a traffic violation. Officers contacted the occupants of the vehicle, both of whom initially provided false identification. The passenger was later identified as 34-year-old Alberto Diaz Garcia of Covina. When officers attempted to remove Garcia from the vehicle, he claimed to be experiencing a medical emergency. Officers observed a knife in Garcia's back pocket and removed it for their safety. As they were checking his waistband for additional weapons, Garcia began resisting officers in reaching for his waistband where he was concealing a firearm. During the ensuing struggle to gain control of the weapon, Garcia was able to remove the weapon from his waistband and discharge one round. In response, one officer fired three rounds, striking Garcia. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to Garcia. He was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The investigation later revealed that the female passenger had been stabbed by Garcia the previous day and was being held against her will as part of an ongoing domestic violence situation. Garcia also had an active domestic violence restraining order in place with the victim at the time of the incident.

Woodbridge Township, New Jersey — On May 29, 2025, shortly after 1:00 a.m., officers from the ...Woodbridge Police Department were dispatched to a residence on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township, in response to multiple 911 calls. The callers reported an assault with injuries during an incident involving a male, later identified as 35-year-old Aamir Allen, who had a baseball bat. Responding officers encountered Allen, who was carrying a bat while walking in the roadway. Officers repeatedly ordered Allen to drop the bat. Allen did not drop the bat and began walking away as officers followed him from a distance. Allen stopped walking outside a closed convenience store in Port Reading, where he stood holding the bat as officers continued ordering him to drop the bat. The defendant responded to the scene shortly after a transmission was broadcast over the police radio reporting that Allen had struck occupied cars with the bat. The defendant exited the vehicle and, after issuing several commands for Allen to drop the bat, fired six shots from his service weapon. Allen was wounded and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at approximately 1:40 a.m. He was pronounced deceased at 9:21 a.m.
A state grand jury, acting under the law that requires the presentation of fatal police encounters to a grand jury, had returned an indictment against the Woodbridge Police Sergeant. After hearing testimony and evidence, the grand jury finished deliberating on April 6, 2026, and voted to indict Sgt. Marco Bruno, who fired a series of shots that struck and killed Allen, with aggravated manslaughter (1st degree). Allen’s death was investigated by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA), and the case was presented to New Jersey residents serving on the grand jury in accordance with the Independent Prosecutor Directive of 2019. Following deliberations, the grand jury voted to file an aggravated manslaughter charge against the defendant.

Pueblo, Colorado — On September 14, 2025, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Pueblo Police Department officers were ...notified of a strong-arm robbery in the 1100 block of Bonforte Blvd. A female citizen exited her vehicle to enter the store. She placed her purse in the cross-body position but just before entering the suspect, 38-year-old Aaron Vigil, stopped her grabbed ahold of her purse and violently ripped it away from her as she fell to ground and was dragged a short distance. Officers located an individual and a vehicle that matched the description of the robbery suspect near 8th Street and Glendale Avenue. A vehicle pursuit ensued, leading to the suspect's vehicle crashing in the 700 block of West 8th Street. Upon contact, the male suspect produced a knife. Officers issued multiple commands for him to drop the knife, but he refused to comply and was subsequently shot. Officers deployed tasers in an attempt to allow officers to provide aid without the risk of being injured. Once the suspect was disarmed, several officers rendered aid, and he was transported to a hospital by medical personnel, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Knife-Wielding Suspect Calls Police On Himself Then Gets Shot After Advancing Toward Officers

Sacramento, California — On March 10, 2026, just before 6:45 p.m., the Sacramento Police Department Communications ...Center received a call reporting a disturbance involving a weapon in the 3100 block of Northstead Drive. The caller reported that an adult male on a school campus was armed with a knife and was chasing anyone who approached him, including another adult male. The caller also provided a description of both males and the knife the suspect was armed with. While officers were enroute to the school, a Sacramento County Sheriff's Office helicopter arrived overhead. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office air unit broadcasted over the radio to responding officers that they had located an individual matching the suspect’s description in front of the school, and that they had given the suspect multiple commands to put the knife down. Responding officers arrived on scene and made contact with the armed suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Jamal Dearmond. The officers gave Dearmond multiple commands to put the knife down and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Dearmond refused to drop the knife, continued to advance toward officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred. During the officer-involved shooting, a less lethal Conducted Energy Device or CED was also deployed. Officers then detained Dearmond and rendered medical aid. It was later determined that the suspect in the officer-involved shooting was the sole caller to the Communications Center regarding the disturbance involving a weapon. Dearmond was transported to an area hospital by the Sacramento Fire Department. On March 13, 2026, the suspect was medically cleared from the hospital and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The knife was recovered at the scene.

Gardena, California — On March 7, 2026, around 11:15 p.m., Los Angeles Police Officers responded to ...a radio call of a Robbery in Progress at a convenience store located at 15300 South Figueroa Street. Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Cynthia Anne Ivie Akers, standing behind the convenience store’s front counter. The officers issued multiple verbal commands to gain Akers’ compliance; however, those commands were disregarded. Akers then suddenly moved toward the counter, and grabbed a handgun from a zippered bag, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Akers was struck by gunfire and subsequently taken into custody. The officers immediately rendered medical aid and requested the response of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). LAFD personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Akers deceased. The investigation later determined that the weapon in Akers’ possession was a pellet gun. The item was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No officers or additional community members were injured during the incident.

Officers Shoot Woman After She Charges With a Sharp Object

Louisville, Kentucky — On March 27, 2026, around 7:45 p.m., LMPD patrol officers responded 7800 Vieux ...Carre Drive on a 911 call for service. The caller explained, her cousin, 28-year-old Katelyn Hall, was extremely agitated, armed with glass, had slit her wrists, locked herself in a bathroom, and had ingested cleaning products. Because of these factors, this run was not eligible or safe for deflection response, according to the LMPD. Officer Robert Baker was the first officer to arrive on scene and speak with the 911 caller who meets him at the steps of the apartment complex. As he walks into the apartment, Officer Baker put on medical gloves indicating an expectation he would be providing aid to someone. Officer Baker speaked with another female in the apartment who explained Hall has cut both of her wrists, was armed with glass, and was bleeding significantly. Officer Baker then went to the bedroom and began to speak with Hall for about 4 minutes, until other officers arrived on scene. During this time, Officer Baker did not approach the bathroom door, but attempted to deescalate the situation through conversation. Officer Baker requested additional officers with less lethal tools and an ETA (estimated time of arrival) for EMS. The 3 officers on scene agreed and developed a plan for one to be less lethal cover with a taser, one to be lethal cover, and one to go hands on when needed. A firefighter used a tool to break the lock on the bathroom door. After the lock was broken, Officer Baker and another officer attempted to open the door, but Hall was sitting in front of the door preventing officers from opening it.
As officers were trying to open the door, Hall breaks more glass in the bathroom. Officers were still unable to get into the bathroom because she was on the floor in front of the door. As time went on, Hall’s voice became more calm and quiet which would indicate significant blood loss or that she was starting to lose consciousness. With the intent to get medical aid to Hall, firefighters then broke the hinges on the door. As the firefighter were breaking the hinges, Officer Gabbard arrived on scene. He was not present for anything that had occurred in the room prior to this moment. After the hinges were broken, the door remained in place, and officers stood back from the door. At this time there were 4 officers in the room: Officer Baker, Officer Gabbard, and two other officers. Officers were standing about 3-5 feet from the bathroom door. As the firefighter moved back from the door, Hall suddenly opened the door and exited rapidly holding a piece of broken porcelain approximately 8-12 inches in length with a sharp and pointed edge. It is believed this was from breaking the top of the toilet while in the bathroom. When she opened the door, officers immediately attempted to give commands for her to stop. She quickly advanced towards officers with the porcelain raised at shoulder level. Officers Baker and Gabbard fired their weapon, striking Hall. The officer with the taser did not discharge the taser. Officers and the firefighters immediately begin to render aid to Hall by applying chest seals and doing CPR. She was transported to UL where she was pronounced deceased.

Jersey City, New Jersey — On September 5, 2025, at approximately 1:22 p.m., two uniformed Jersey ...City officers were traveling southbound on John F. Kennedy Boulevard (JFK Blvd.) in a marked police vehicle. Simultaneously, Jersey City Police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes was travelling northbound in a separate marked police vehicle. Sergeant Reyes made a U-turn. According to his later-given statement to law enforcement, he did so to determine if someone had shot at his vehicle. According to a civilian’s later-given statement, the civilian pointed out to Sergeant Reyes an individual, later identified as 26-year-old Steven Sanchez, walking southbound as the person who had shot at Sergeant Reyes’ police vehicle. A short distance away, the two officers in the other southbound marked police vehicle similarly made a U-turn. According to their later-given statements to law enforcement, they also sought to investigate if someone had shot at their police vehicle.
At approximately 1:23 p.m., the two uniformed officers exited their police vehicle on JFK Blvd. near Clinton Avenue. They observed Sanchez to be in possession of what appeared to be a handgun and began issuing commands for him to drop the weapon. Sanchez then pointed the weapon in the officers’ direction. Sergeant Reyes then exited his police vehicle and exchanged fire with Sanchez, who was struck and injured. After being struck, Sanchez fired his weapon in the direction of officers and ran towards Sergeant Reyes. A physical struggle ensued and Sanchez was taken into custody. Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived. Sanchez was subsequently transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 8:45 p.m. Sergeant Reyes sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the encounter. No other officers or civilians were injured during the incident. A compressed air pistol, as well as numerous projectiles believed to have been fired from that weapon, were recovered at the scene.
